__ “Qing Encounters: Artistic Exchanges between China and the West,” is a
symposium to be held at Peking University on October 10-13, 2012.
It aims at bringing together Chinese and Western scholars to address a topic of
cross-cultural exchange that, thus far, has mostly been approached
one-directionally, with Western scholars studying the phenomenon of Chinoiserie (impact of Chinese art in
the West) and Chinese scholars looking at Western influences in Chinese art and
architecture. The goal of the symposium is to focus on the reciprocal aspect of
the exchange and to gain a deeper understanding of its hybrid products, the
complexity of which can only be fully understood through a collaborative study
by both Chinese and Western scholars, using a variety of methodologies.
The symposium is held under the auspices of the J. Paul Getty Foundation and is conceived in the spirit of its “Connecting Art Histories” initiative, which “aims to increase opportunities for sustained intellectual exchange across national and regional borders… [and] springs from the recognition that all forms of art historical study will be stronger when scholars from around the world inform each other's ideas and methodologies.”
The symposium is co-organized by Peking University and Seton Hall University. Its steering committee is comprised of Petra Chu (Seton Hall University); Ding Ning (Peking University); and Greg Thomas (University of Hong Kong). Advisor: Thomas Gaehtgens, Getty Research Institute.
